How to choose a Qualified Builder/Renovator

  • Start early
  • Contact a builder/renovator and discuss preliminary house plans. This is to assure that your chosen plan will fit your building lot and budget before investing in a set of blue prints.
  • Using a basic floor plan and elevation plan, your builder/renovator should be able to provide you with a summarized preliminary estimate for the project.
  • Once a preliminary plan and cost estimate are agreed to by both parties, then a full set of plans is purchased. The builder/renovator should be able to advise you on names of qualified home plan designers/providers.
  • With the final plans, the builder/renovator will be able to provide you with a detailed estimate of materials, labour and sub-contractor labour required for the project.
  • The prospective home owner will then review the final estimate with the builder/renovator and approve the estimate before proceeding with a contract.
  • A contract is provided by the builder/renovator with detailed specifications, payment schedules and completion date. It is highly recommended that prospective home owner(s) review the contract with their lawyers before signing. This gives both parties adequate protection.
  • The project is then scheduled.

It’s worth waiting for the right builder/renovator. Your home is major investment and well worth doing things right!
